MND Scotland is the only charity in Scotland dedicated to directly supporting people with motor neuron disease (MND), their families and friends.
MND is a rapidly progressing terminal neurological illness, which stops signals from the brain reaching the muscles. This causes muscle weakness and wasting. MND can rob someone of the ability to walk, talk, swallow and breathe. The average life expectancy of someone with MND is just 18 months from diagnosis. There is no cure or meaningful treatments.
Since being founded over forty years ago, MND Scotland has provided practical, financial and emotional support to anyone affected by MND whilst also funding essential research into finding effective treatments and a cure.
Our dedicated support team provide the following support free to people affected by MND in Scotland:
- Bespoke benefits advice and income maximisation.
- Counselling and bereavement support for people affected by MND.
- Personalised advice and support with social care, housing, home adaptations and access to local services.
- Voice banking.
- Fully accessible holiday lodges in St Andrews and Oban.
- Wills and Power of Attorney Service.
- Policy and campaigning to represent the voices of people with MND and their families.
MND Scotland also funds vital MND research. Adding to our growing knowledge of MND will help us to improve diagnosis, care, and treatment for those affected by MND in the future.
At MND Scotland we fund:
- Clinical trials (such as the UK’s largest MND clinical trial MND SMART), research aimed to help better understand the causes of MND and identify new treatments or targets for treatments.
- Research to help is improve how MND is diagnosed to help speed up the time consuming and stressful diagnostic process.
- Social science research to help understand how an MND diagnosis impacts a person, or their families, and how quality of life can be improved.
- Projects which aim to improve the care available for people affected by MND.
