Islington Mind is a local Mind association operating in Islington, London. We support people who experience mental health problems for the past 39 years. We work with the local authority and National Health Service (NHS) to cater the mental health needs of our local communities. Islington is one of the most deprived communities in England where poverty and deprivation is high. It is one of the densest boroughs in London too. All these contribute to high level of stress, anxiety, depression, and other long term mental illnesses.
A large proportion of our service users are old and have complex mental health issues along with other comorbidities- pushing them to further deprivation, poverty, isolation, and early death than their peers.
Every year we support over 1100 people with complex mental health issues.
We are one of a few charities in London providing specialist mental health support to LGBTQ+ community members of greater London for over two decades.
This year we are stretched with our own resources as number of people seeking mental health support has increased dramatically due to the pandemic. As the need is so great and urgent, we ae compelled to use our own reserves to assist these people. But that will only last for a few months. With your help we can continue to support.
The support and advice we offer aims to improve people's mental (and physical) well-being, strengthen self-esteem and confidence, promote strong relationships with family, friends, and communities, helping people expand their support network, improve resilience, and improve self-management of their mental health problems. We also help people get into education, training or work and achieve their personal and social goals.
Increasing understanding about mental health is a priority for us so we also work in communities to raise awareness and challenge the stigma which continues to affect the lives of people with mental health problems.
